Olivia Newton John had a prolific career. Besides being a hit singer, she was an actress most famous for her role in Grease across from John Travolta. But despite being a fighter, she announced that her debilitating back pain was too much. At 68, she canceled tour dates in North America and sought treatment for what she thought was horrible sciatica. But that’s when her doctors broke the bad news – she had breast cancer. Her fans were crushed to learn that her breast cancer had returned.
They thought she had beat it. She was first diagnosed with it back in 1992. She endured months of chemotherapy, a partial mastectomy and even breast reconstruction surgery. But it apparently wasn’t enough. Now two and a half decades later, breast cancer has reared up again. But now, three months after its diagnosis, Olivia Newton John was broken her silence with some startling news..
Olivia Newton John didn’t want to leave her fans hanging for too long. After getting a handle on her cancer treatment, she decided to post a video message to Facebook with an update on her health. Although she has cancer, she is fighting it hard and retains her positive attitude.
In the video, she expressed the following message:
“I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you who sent such kind and loving messages of support over the past few months. Your prayers and well wishes have truly helped me, and continued to lift my spirits. I’m feeling great and so look forward to seeing you soon!”
When Olivia finishes her final treatment, she might be up to performing again. And this could be as soon as the early autumn or before summer’s official end.
Medical experts are optimistic. Because this second occurrence of breast cancer came so much later than her initial bout, their outlook is positive. This huge gap between cancer occurrences means this breast cancer is “very treatable,” Carolyn Runowicz told Country Rebel.
“… the further out you are from your initial diagnosis, the better the prognosis.”
Olivia Newton John also revealed that she is using medical marijuana during her cancer treatment. And she thinks the medicine should be made more widely available.
“It’s an important part of treatment, and it should be available,” she said.
She went on to explain more about her use of the medical-grade marijuana during her cancer treatment.
“I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing… It’s a plant that has been maligned for so long, and has so many abilities to heal,” she said.
Because she sees first hand how powerful the drug is in treating her breast cancer, Olivia Newton John plans to become an advocate for medical marijuana.
She wants to “champion its use” and push for legalization in Australia.
“It’s an important part of treatment, and it should be available. I use it for the pain and it’s also a medicinal thing to do — the research shows it’s really helpful.”
